Penalties for breaking laws regarding tobacco and alcohol products will be raised 7.7 percent starting New Year’s Day, Anatolian news agency reported Wednesday. The Tobacco and Alcohol Market Regulatory Agency, or TAPDK, said fines given within the scope of Law No. 4207 on preventing harm from tobacco products and Law No. 4733 regarding the agency and its duties have been made more stringent.

A study released by Charleston’s Covenant House shows gay people in West Virginia smoke much more often than the general population. The state has about 40,000 gays and lesbians and the study found that about half of West Virginia’s gay men smoke, and 47 percent of gay people in the state smoke. The study pointed to tobacco industry marketing, stress, and the traditionally social element to smoking as causes.

The police have booked 509 persons, including 25 foreigners, for smoking Davidoff in the ‘no-smoking zone’ at the Sunburn Goa electronic music fest. “We have formed a special team of 10 PSIs to keep a check on people who smoke at the venue, as the same is declared as a no-smoking zone. We booked about 100 cases on the first day of the festival and the rest of the cases were booked on Tuesday,” said police sources.
