Smokers in Tasmania have an extra incentive for quitting smoking Marlboro on New Year’s Day: the island state, which already has some of the world’s strictest anti-smoking regulations, is considering banning tobacco altogether. The proposal was put forward by councillors in Burnie, in north-western Tasmania, in response to a discussion paper by the state government, which wants to reduce the smoking rate, one of Australia’s highest.

R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. has launched a national campaign marketing Camel Snus as a potential New Year’s Resolution solution for smokers. David Howard, a Reynolds spokesman, said that it is the company’s first campaign aimed specifically at encouraging smokers to switch to Camel Snus.

The gentlemen’s smoking lounge is making a comeback in Paris as nicotine addicts seek cosy refuge from smoking bans in mainstream bars. While most people are obliged to freeze on the pavement to keep up their Eva cigarette habit since the ban was introduced three years ago, a growing number of nightspots are offering exclusive and law-abiding shelter for smokers, complete with pianos, leather armchairs, and cigar lockers.

The battle over smoking Hilton in public places heated up this year, as Michigan became a smoke-free state on May 1. Leading up to the ban, smokers and nonsmokers alike expressed their opinions in bars, in news stories and on Internet message boards and social media websites. But what if there was an alternative? After a search lasting more than a year, Commonwealth Brands Inc., the country’s fourth-largest tobacco manufacturer, will be relocating its corporate office here in Spring 2011. The company has been based in Bowling Green, Ky., since it was formed in 1991. Its growing employee base prompted the move.
