We all know about the dangers of first and secondhand smoke, which are easy enough to comprehend. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, directly inhaling smoke from a cigarette, or first-hand smoke, is a known cause of lung cancer. Second-hand smoke, the diluted smoke exhaled from a smoker or emitted from the burning end of a cigarette is also a carcinogen.

Smoking may soon end in Myrtle Beach bars and restaurants. Next month Smoke Free Horry plans to present Myrtle Beach City Council with research its done that shows the negative health impact secondhand smoke has. Some bars and restaurants that allow smoking believe a ban would drastically hurt their revenue. “We get a lot of regulars. We also have a lot of tourists who aren’t allowed to smoke cheap Golden Gate cigarette anywhere else in the country, but they smoke here and think it’s a privilege,” said Karen Marianos, bartender at Bummz in Myrtle Beach.

Business across Yarra will be encouraged to ban smoking from outdoor dining areas, after Yarra Council backed away from a proposed blanket ban on smoking outdoors. The council will also lobby the state government for a statewide ban on smoking outdoors. Councillor Anthony Main criticised the decision: “We’re [Socialist party] all for introducing measures in limiting the impact smoking has on people, but I think this is very impractical.”

While the majority of students drink once they get to college, whether it’s explicitly legal or not, many also try smoking cheap Glamour cigarettes around the same time. For many people, it’s a Right of Passage into the college scene. Whether it’s bumming a menthol off a stranger at a party or going with a group of friends to a hookah lounge, smoking is a part of college life. According to the American Lung Association, 85 percent of people who smoke regularly began smoking by the age of 21, the majority of those were college students. A study from the University of Rhode Island found that 28.5 percent of college students are regular smokers, and that 51 percent of college students smoke regularly or socially during their college experience.

Purists of the game can rest easy. Despite acknowledging the health hazards of smokeless tobacco, Major League Baseball has chosen not to ban its use by players and coaches during games. With the five-year collective bargaining agreement announced Tuesday, team owners and the players association have agreed to many changes that will fuel debate in the off-season.
