Most American adults who smoke wish they could quit, and more than half have tried within the past year, according to a report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The report says 68.8 percent of current American adult smokers say they want to quit and 52.4 percent of adult smokers tried to quit within the past year. The report says 48.3 percent of smokers who saw a health professional in the past year recalled getting advice to quit and 31.7 percent used counseling and/or medications in the past year.

Shropshire Council has invested £6.4 million of taxpayers’ cash into tobacco firms, it was revealed today. Council bosses have used the money from pension pots to invest in a number of cheap Cigaronne cigarette stocks. But the move has been criticised by anti-smoking campaigners. However, council chiefs today insisted they would not withdraw the investment. It follows a question raised at a recent meeting by Ludlow East county councillor Tracy Huffer.

Tobacco experts are upbeat about prospects for a spike in burley prices in the marketing season getting under way, thanks in part to favorable curing conditions that should make the leaf more appealing to cigarette producers.

The recent Southeast Asian Games, which this nation hosted admirably, were considered a success on numerous fronts. Not only did Indonesia garner a record number of medals, the entire period was relatively smooth and well-managed. The games were also notable for another reason: the event was totally free from any form of tobacco advertising. This is a first in Indonesia and the organizers should be applauded for demonstrating that if there is a will there is a way. As a nation, we can cut our reliance on the money generated from cigarette advertising and still have a successful major event.

An Auckland karaoke bar has become the first in the city to be prosecuted for breaking smokefree laws. It is seven years since the legislation came into effect, and Fanseco Limited has been fined $2600. Auckland Medical Officer of Health, Dr Andrew Lindsay, said the karaoke venue is now under new ownership, but had been the subject of a number of complaints from the public about people smoking best quality Camel cigarettes inside the premises.
