Gov. Pat Quinn should sign new regulation that increases the state’s cigarettes taxes, in spite of the dissatisfaction from border communities that it will hurt tobacco business. The tax is a sensible part of a pack to fix the state’s financially disturbing Medicaid special programs. While we usually were against raising tobacco taxes, this is a tax that helps solve a lot of state problems. Quinn has explained that he plans to sign the new law, which would raise the total tax on a package of cigs to $1.98 beginning June 24. Other smoking products also will see a big increase in taxes starting with July 1.

Shame on the tobacco company. Its shocking misleading, almost $50 million campaign appears to have worked. Prop. 29, which would have increased cigarettes taxes by $1 a package to fund cancer investigation and anti-smoking new efforts, was moving on the verge of defeat Wednesday. If the result holds, the industry can go back to its tobacco business of hooking people on a smoking product that causes cancer and innumerable other health problems.

It is clear from the study of the House ways and means committee that there is a caution design to destroy local smoking brands to make room for the domination of imported tobacco brands. Expensive brands such as Marlboro and Philip Morris are to be reclassified to a higher level and be taxed at P28.30 per package. This is the same rate that will be imposed on the smoking brands like Lucky Strike to be imported by British American Tobacco.

It was found that approximately 23 per cent of women enter pregnancy as smokers and more than half continue to smoke tobacco even during pregnancy, leading to excess healthcare costs. In one of the first researches to estimate smoking bans and taxes on cigs, along with the level of smoking control spending, scientists have found that state tobacco control regulations can be more effective in cutting smoking during pregnancy, and in preventing a return to smoking within four months on average.

The government has announced big increase in taxes on smoking products in the budget for the financial year 2012-13, but according to health reporters, it alone cannot serve a lot on the subject of smoking control in the country. Health experts declared that taxes must be increased numerous on smoking products as evidence showed that price increased of 10% decreases consumption of cigarettes by up to 8% especially in low and middle-income countries.
