The sin tax reform procedure will certainly increase the prices of cigarettes and alcoholic beverages, but there won’t be an instant and noticeable drop in the number of smokers quitting the habit simply because for instance a stick of Marlboro Red has become much more expensive. However government representatives are convinced that the action, expecting President Benigno S. Aquino signature, will sooner or later reduce cigarette use. “The sin tax regulation will boost taxes for tobacco products and alcoholic drinks. It will consequently increase the price of cigarettes and drinking,” Finance Assistant Secretary Ma. Teresa Habitan stated in an interview.
