Apartment Fire Because Careless Smoking
Oklahoma City firefighters battled a massive apartment fire at the Pinehurst Apartments near Northwest 122nd Street and MacArthur Boulevard. They said the fire was the result of careless smoking and the fire destroyed most of the complex. A maintenance worker called 911 after noticing smoke and flames in one apartment.
“As soon we walked out our door it was like a wall of heat and flames,” said one resident who evacuated his apartment, and made it out safely with a puppy. “You could just see the fire as soon as you walked out the door.”
Firefighters said when they arrived, flames were everywhere. Fortunately, everyone inside was already out, but they searched the building just to be sure. There have been no reports of injuries, but at least 8 apartment were damaged or destroyed.
“We heard someone banging and then there was smoke,” said another resident. “Our apartment wasn’t on fire but downstairs, smoke was coming up out of nowhere. It just all caught so fast.”"I’d never really been in a fire,” said another inhabitants. “You hear about it, stop drop and roll, but you never expect to wake up and have smoke and really feel the effects of it.”In addition to battling the flames, firefighters had to battle low water pressure as well.
These apartments are in the area of Oklahoma City that is suffering from a water outage because of a water main break. Even with the initial challenge, firefighters got the blaze knocked down in about half an hour.
