While the Palmetto State has made some strides, at local levels, on ordinances banning smoking discount Bond cigarettes in restaurants and bars, we still got all F’s on the American Lung Association’s “State of Tobacco Control 2012″ report, released earlier this month. The report grades states on cigarette tax rates (F), tobacco prevention and control program funding (F), coverage of cessation treatments and services (F) and smoke-free air laws (F). South Carolina was among seven states that made all F’s, while no state received straight A’s.

Despite the fact that Americans’ access to basic necessities, such as food, medicine, shelter, and healthcare has reached a four-year low of 81.2 percent this October, 21.1 percent of adult Americans continue to smoke, according to new data pertaining to adult Americans 18 years or older from the October 2011 Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index(R) (WBI). This marks the third month in a row that the percentage of Americans who smoke has reached 21 percent.

Robert Pattinson is still smoking President cigarettes, a bad habit he has yet to kick. The sexy British actor was spotted on the balcony of his Beverly Hills Hotel room, puffing away. They are an increasingly rare breed these days, it’s true, but you can spot them still, even now, a dogged blight on our otherwise Keep Britain Tidy streets. Collectively, they possess a furtive air, congregating in twos and threes, sometimes speaking but just as often not and in whatever the weather. And when they make for their pockets, it is not a gun they are reaching for but something that is, statistically, more dangerous yet: a Golden Gate Blue cigarette.

Don’t misinterpret this, but the mobile wallet may be the new Marlboro man. Marlboro cigarettes were marketed to women until the 1950s. It’s a famous story in advertising circles how the Marlboro man came to be. Back then, filtered cigarettes were viewed more as a woman’s choice.
