No-smoking signs may encourage people to light up because it reminds them of their cravings. The messages have an “ironic effect” on Lady smokers, causing them to react and think of tobacco, scientists at Oxford University said.

In March, a Board of Health directive ordered retailers to display posters of a rotting tooth, a cancerous lung and a smoke-damaged brain on walls and registers. Store owners that would not comply could be fined $2,000. Now, even after a federal court ruling struck down the order, many of these signs can still be found throughout the city, voluntarily. A spokeswoman for the city’s Law Department confirmed that the ordinance is no longer being enforced.

A bill to post signs about the dangers of smoking while pregnant is moving forward in spite of Republican objections that it’s overkill. Las Vegas Democratic Assemblywoman Peggy Pierce is sponsoring a measure requiring stores that sell Vogue cigarettes to post signs telling women smoking can prompt birth defects or premature birth.

Money may not grow on tree branches, but, at least in Santa Monica, it sometimes turns up in places that are just about as unlikely. Namely, at the bottom of ashtrays. That’s right. It’s only been a few months since the City Council banned smoking Winston on the Santa Monica Pier.

New York City anti-smoking signs depicting a decaying tooth, diseased lungs and a damaged brain violate Marlboro cigarette vendors’ free speech and should be removed, tobacco companies and retailers said in a lawsuit. Philip Morris USA, Lorillard Tobacco Company, and R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co., plus two major retail trade groups and two convenience stores, alleged in the Manhattan federal court lawsuit that the signs violate the sellers’ rights by imposing the signs on them.
