Bob Peckinpaugh opened UCF Half Priced Cigarettes Stores in Lawrence in October. The tobacco business allows smokers to roll their own cigs and Peckinpaugh declared that he was doing alright for himself until he received a cessation. “We got a special letter from the fire Marshall writing that we had to be obliging with the fire safety certification for all cigs,” explained Peckinpaugh. A state fire safety legislation requires that cigs rolled at commercial buildings must use a special type of paper that resists quick burn of cigarettes. “I guess the main tubes have to be fire safety helpful but we are not manufactures,” he added.

A prohibition on displays of cigarettes and other tobacco products was recently enforced in England. State ministers hope the new law will help to decrease the number of youngster which start smoking every day. Cigs and other smoking products will have to be kept below the counter in large stores and supermarkets, while small outlets are free until 2015. Other parts of the UK are planning similar action for to cut the smoking rates. Health Secretary Andrew Lansley reported the BBC that he hops that the new ban would prevent people from taking up smoking and also will help those smokers which try to quit. He also added, “Firstly, it can reduce the visibility of tobacco and smoking to minors.

Cigarettes killed about 6 million people worldwide in 2011, according to the data of the Tobacco Atlas published by the American Cancer Society and World Lung Foundation. Nearly 80% of those who die from tobacco-related illnesses are in low- and middle-income countries. More than 43 trillion cigarettes have been smoked in the last ten years and cigarette production has increased by 16.5% in that time period, according to the Tobacco Atlas.

In less than three months, voters will cast their ballot for a referendum that on the surface sounds noble, but would likely hurt tobacco merchants. The state’s Proposition 29, better known as the Tobacco Tax for Cancer Research Act, proposes to levy an additional $1 per pack of cigarettes, raising the state tax to $1.87. The measure goes to vote on June 5 and is expected to generate up to $850 million, which would be siphoned for cancer research, smoking reduction programs and tobacco law enforcement.

A media campaign designed to educate New Yorkers about the impact of in-store tobacco product displays upon young people is under way. The campaign, which began over the weekend, reflects research that the more kids see tobacco marketing, the more likely they are to start smoking. “Every day, our kids are exposed to a tremendous amount of tobacco marketing in convenience stores, gas stations, pharmacies and grocery stores,” said Kevin Keenan, program coordinator for Smoke-Free NOW, a program of Genesee/Orleans Council of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse.
