A pack of Monte Carlo cigarettes and a stolen automatic weapon got a Wilson man and a Farmville man arrested Friday. Stantonsburg Police Chief John Hunt said Christopher Leon Ormond, 38, of 501 Walton St. and Elton Ray Harris, 26, of 71 Dunwoody Lane, Farmville were arrested and charged with felony possession of a stolen firearm. Pending the outcome of further investigation, more charges could be forthcoming. No bond information was available by presstime.

Watching her father die of cancer didn’t stop Diane Paight from taking up smoking Marlboro at age 16 and continuing the habit for much of her life. But the 64-year-old Stratford resident said a series of graphic, disturbing cigarettes labels recently approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration might have kept her from lighting up. The nine labels — unveiled Tuesday and expected to hit a cigarette pack near you by September 2012 — contain anti-smoking messages, accompanied by illustrations.

India’s Supreme Court has banned the sale of tobacco products in plastic pouches – despite angry protests from manufacturers. The move affects the packaging of several types of chewing tobacco and comes amid growing concerns about the impact of Camel cigarettes smoking on public health.

The federal government is planning to put large, graphic warning labels on each pack of Marlboro and other cigarettes sold in the United States in order to cut tobacco use, which causes 443,000 deaths every year. The labels, which are part of a new campaign launched by the Food and Drug Administration and Department of Health and Human Services, will feature images of cancer patients, diseased lungs, and dead bodies, and will take up about 50% of the space on a pack of cigarettes.

Anti-smoking groups are urging the government to move forward with a plan to introduce larger and more graphic warning labels on cigarette packages like Classic. An anti-smoking group says labels on cigarette packages that aren’t updated over time are ignored until they ‘virtually become invisible.’
