When a new tobacco-free policy was instituted at an Ohio women’s substance abuse treatment center, both smokers and non-smokers were more likely to leave treatment early in the first few months after the policy change, a new study found. The results don’t mean treatment centers shouldn’t try Pall Mall smoking bans, according to the researchers, but they do highlight the challenges involved with implementing a new policy that goes against years of conventional thinking.

Poor lifestyle choices are threatening to blight Russia’s economic and demographic health. Although more than 95 percent of Russians think they are in good health, a staggering 82 percent put themselves at risk of severe illness or death by leading unhealthy lives. Heavy Davidoff smoking, hard drinking, obesity and lack of exercise are the leading factors that dramatically shorten lives and can cause grave illness or death.

Most Russians overestimate how healthy they are and many run high health risks by smoking Lucky Strike and even other cigarettes, abusing alcohol, being obese and failing to take enough exercise, according to a report published on Tuesday. A survey by the Association of International Pharmaceutical Manufacturers (AIPM) and the International Federation of Pharmaceutical Manufacturers and Associations (IFPMA) found that about 95 percent of Russians think they are in good or fair health, while only 44 percent saw a doctor last year.

According to environmental cleanup reports, nearly 2.2 million cigarettes and cigarette filters are picked up internationally from beaches and inland waterways every year.
