Although eight states boosted their sales taxes on cigarettes over the past two years, that’s a decline in the number of such increases by states compared to 2009, a new report from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows. One thing that smoking prevention experts know from accumulated data is that smoking rates decline as cigarette prices go up, the CDC said. “Increasing cigarette excise taxes directly increases the price of cigarettes, thereby reducing the demand for cigarettes and, ultimately, smoking-related death and disease,” the report’s authors wrote in the March 29 issue of the CDC journal Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Reoprt.

A U.S. judge sided with tobacco industries on Wednesday, ruling that laws requiring large graphic health warnings on cigarette packaging and advertising violate free-speech rights under the U.S. Constitution. Cigarette makers challenged the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s rule requiring companies to label tobacco products with images of rotting teeth, diseased lungs and other images intended to illustrate the dangers of smoking habit.

The government of the Philippines will update the nations increased taxes on the sale of tobacco products, to lower the country’s smoking rate and to increase government revenues. On February 28th the House of Representatives of the Philippines held a hearing on a new bill proposing an overhaul to the excise cigarettes taxes enforced on the sale of tobacco products in the Philippines, which will instate a single unitary tax rate to be adjusted annually in line with the level of inflation in the country.

An Upstate tobacco shop owner declared that smokers can buy cigarettes without paying state and federal taxes because of a tax gap. M.J. Farah, owner of Jake’s One Stop in Pelzer, is offering clients the chance to even roll their own smoking products. “The customers are taking only advantage of the taxes cut. They don’t have to pay the high taxes on the smokes if they are making their own favorite cigs,” explained Farah. Farah recently brought three new cigarettes making machines especially for smoking customers. He was already trading roll-your-own tobacco products, but the new cigarette machines will save the customers time and of course will save their money.

Smokers and dippers alike might be shelling out a little more dough to indulge in the nicotine habit, if three lawmakers have their way in this session. A fresh bill put before the Senate in Tuesday’s session would hike the tax on cheap Lady cigarettes and smokeless tobacco, possibly generating up to $120 million. As written, the measure would jack the tax on cigarettes to $1.55 per pack, or a $1 increase.
