States’ Attept to Increase Cigarette Taxes

One thing that smoking prevention experts know from accumulated data is that smoking rates decline as cigarette prices go up, the CDC said. “Increasing cigarette excise taxes directly increases the price of cigarettes, thereby reducing the demand for cigarettes and, ultimately, smoking-related death and disease,” the report’s authors wrote in the March 29 issue of the CDC journal Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Reoprt.

Farah, owner of Jake’s One Stop in Pelzer, is offering clients the chance to even roll their own smoking products. “The customers are taking only advantage of the taxes cut. They don’t have to pay the high taxes on the smokes if they are making their own favorite cigs,” explained Farah. Farah recently brought three new cigarettes making machines especially for smoking customers. He was already trading roll-your-own tobacco products, but the new cigarette machines will save the customers time and of course will save their money.

New Law will Increase Tax on Cigarettes

A fresh bill put before the Senate in Tuesday’s session would hike the tax on cheap Lady cigarettes and smokeless tobacco, possibly generating up to $120 million. As written, the measure would jack the tax on cigarettes to $1.55 per pack, or a $1 increase.
