A volunteer group says something needs to be done about cigarette butts in Vancouver‘s West End. John Merzetti started the West End Clean Up in May 2007 and has been leading monthly cleanings ever since. “Some of our people go out daily, cleaning up their own block or a particular patch of the West End that needs some TLC.”

Firefighters are investigating the cause of a fast moving natural cover fire that occurred Wednesday near the 4.8 mile marker on U.S. 65. The Western Taney County Fire Protection District was able to contain the fire to 1.5 acres. It had moved up the right of way embankment into a wooded area.

According to Alberta Environment, more than seven per cent of garbage collected throughout the province is tobacco related. This can vary from OK cigarette cartons and wrappers, to cigarette butts disposed of after smoking. Here in Drayton Valley, as in many towns and cities, sidewalks and parking lots are often littered with these esthetically displeasing items.
