After the Food and Drug Administration released new graphic photos it will require for Viceroy cigarette package labels Tuesday morning, several Rowan smokers remain undeterred. The FDA released nine new warning labels — the most significant change to cigarette packs in 25 years — which depict the negative health effects of tobacco use.

Leading cigarette manufacturers Godfrey Phillips India and ITC have resumed production after getting directions from the government on what kind of pictorial warnings should be displayed on the packets. When contacted, GPI Vice-President Marketing Neeta Kapur confirmed that the company has resumed production since Monday.

Federal regulators unveiled proposals Wednesday that would place graphic depictions of death and disease on every pack of Marlboro cigarettes sold in the United States. The warnings would be the most radical redesign of cigarette packages in 25 years, relegating such iconic brand images as Joe Camel to a secondary role on cigarette packaging.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has shortlisted deathbed images of Canadian anti-smoking crusader Barb Tarbox for its new Vogue cigarette package warnings. The image shows an emaciated and dazed Tarbox in bed during her last days in palliative care at Edmonton’s Grey Nuns Hospital. “Cigarettes cause cancer,” the warning reads.

The Philippines on Monday joined countries that use picture-based health warnings printed on the packages of tobacco products after the release of the Department of Health (DoH) Administrative Order No. 2010-0013 mandating measures that would prohibit the promotion of tobacco use through packaging and labeling. The policy will become effective 15 days from the publication of the order and covers all tobacco products and tobacco manufacturers, importers, exporters, wholesalers, distributors, retailers, concessionaires, and other sellers of tobacco products in the Philippines.
