Plans to put cheap Focus cigarettes and tobacco in plain packaging have been criticised by a Whitstable shopkeeper. Last month the government announced that the public consultation on tobacco packaging due to take place by the end of last year had been put back to the spring. This means that it will come at the same time as supermarkets in England must comply with a law banning tobacco displays which comes into force on April 6.

The tobacco tax will more than double, from MOP 4 to MOP 10, according to a government-proposed draft law recently sent to lawmakers’ approval. Local anti-smoking associations regard the MOP 6 raise as too low, while Hong Kong-based World Health Organisation (WHO) senior policy advisor Judith Mackay says it is still “inadequate”.

The Iowa Tobacco Use Prevention & Control Commission is expected to convene Friday morning, where legislators intend to tackle the issue of what they characterize as a mission to fold the division. Earlier this week, Sen. Herman Quirmbach (D-Ames), an ex-officio commission member, distributed a letter admonishing Iowa Department of Public Health director Dr. Mariannette Miller-Meeks for “firing” the tobacco division administrator and said Miller-Meeks intends to shut down the division.

When John St. Germain, 21, of Shoreham made his daily trip to Maplefields to pick up a pack of Monte Carlo cigarettes on July 1, he looked past the cashier, realized the price of cigarettes had skyrocketed overnight, pushed his wallet back into his pocket and walked out the door empty-handed, swearing never to buy another pack again.

Citations for violating Kanawha’s smoking ban have dropped significantly since the ban was extended to bars and gambling establishments three years ago. Anita Ray, director of environmental services for the Kanawha-Charleston Health Department, said inspectors found 11 violations in 3,149 Clean Indoor Air inspections in the last fiscal year, which ended July 1.
