Former pack-a-day smoker Peter Grindrod has embraced a growing trend towards swapping traditional cigarettes for the cheaper electronic version. Mr Grindrod, who owns Mount Maunganui’s Tay Street Dairy, said some smokers were dodging the January 1 price hike by spending $30 to $40 a week on e-cigarettes compared with $100 on the real thing. Mr Grindrod, who made the switch 10 months ago, said one e-cigarette, offering 500 puffs, was equivalent to a normal packet of 20 cigarettes.

Modified-risk tobacco products like e-cigarettes and tobacco lozenges, products that may reduce health risks of using tobacco, need to go through a rigorous scientific evaluation before being approved to be marketed as low-risk by the Food and Drug Administration, according to a report issued on Wednesday by the Institute of Medicine.

Valerie Schwaber smoked cigarettes while wearing the nicotine patch. It didn’t curb her cravings. The gum caused her heart to race. Acupuncture had no effect either. Then Schwaber, a 29-year-old emergency medical technician from Lexington who smoked as much as three packs a day, tried electronic cigarettes.

Josh Ellison, 28, was born in Columbia and later moved to Conway with his mother and brother. “My mother’s family is from Conway, and we moved there right after elementary school,” he says. His roots run deep in the area, and his grandfather, Thurman W. Anderson, Sr. served as Horry County Superintendent of Education for many years, actually integrating Horry County Schools in the 1960s and is credited as one of the founding fathers of Coastal Carolina University.

Kretek International Inc. offers a new line of CIG2O e-cigarette products. The CIG2O rechargeable water vapor cigar was developed in the U.S. for Kretek by Spark Industries. CIG2O e-cigarettes were successfully launched in Winston smoke shops early in 2010. The strength of adult consumer response led to the current nationwide roll out.
