Due to their exotic aroma, clove-flavored discount Karelia cigarettes have lured young people into smoking, according to Dr Hathai Chitanon, president to the Thailand Health Promotion Institute. “A clove cigarette releases eugenol, an essential oil obtained from cloves. Inhaling it causes an upper part of the trachea to go numb. It also diminishes the gag reflex in smokers and smoke can get deep into the lungs,” he said. ”It’s eugenol that makes young people addicted to clove-flavoured cigarettes, compared to conventional ones,” he said. Dr Hathai, who was speaking at a recent forum on clove cigarettes held by the Thailand Health Promotion Institute, National Health Foundation and Thai Health Promotion Foundation also expressed concern that clove cigarettes or kretek, which are smuggled from Indonesia can be widely found on Bangkok streets.

A recent inspection from the Indiana Excise Police Found more Hoosier businesses are turning away minors trying to by tobacco products. The inspection found that just over four percent of businesses checked in Vanderburgh County failed to turn minors away and were fined as consequence. Excise Police say it’s a good step in getting tobacco away from minors before they get addicted. Marina Pointe employee Shelby Bartholome says it might be illegal, but she sees plenty of minors trying to buy tobacco products, but she says the store has a strict policy.

Shocked by how easily Quebec’s 100,000 teenage smokers buy tax free Plugarul cigarettes, the Youth Coalition Against Smoking launched a new campaign on Tuesday shaming dépanneurs who sell to minors. “It is child’s play for a teenager to buy cigarettes in this province,” said Mélanie Girardeau, 16, a spokesperson for the coalition. Despite fines that range as high as $2,000 for a first infraction, one in five dépanneurs is believed to sell cigarettes and cigarillos to minors. ”If teens continue smoking they’ll be up to one pack a day. Doesn’t that embarrass you? As a society shouldn’t we be ashamed?” asks a video posted by the youth group.

A study was recently published in Paediatrics and Child Health on the prevalence and risk indicators of smoking among First Nations youth living on reserve in Saskatchewan. Children in Grades 5 to 8 completed a questionnaire which included the youth smoking survey originally developed by Health Canada and implemented by Statistics Canada across Canada. The response rate for the survey was 75 per cent.

Though Texas is collecting about $1.9 billion a year from cigarette taxes and its big tobacco settlement, it is using only a tiny portion on programs to prevent youth smoking cheap MT cigarette, a new study found. Texas ranked 39th in the study among states in paying for smoking prevention and cessation — and now allocates only $5.5 million per year for those items. ”This means Texas is spending less than a penny of every dollar in tobacco revenue to fight tobacco use,” said a statement issued with the report by the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids and other organizations last week.
