Sam’s Restaurant in Scott county is one of the few spots where you can still light up inside. “Non smokers have rights but as as smokers, have rights also,” says George Lewis, a customer of Sam’s. “This ain’t a communist country, or it ain’t supposed to be. But, it’s getting more like it every day,” says another Sam’s customer, Billy Barnes.

National Non-Smoking Week began Sunday, and Prime Minister Stephen Harper issued a statement encouraging smokers to make a resolution “to quit the habit both for themselves and for their loved ones. “Every year smoking adversely impacts the health of millions of Canadians – including those affected by second-hand smoke – heightening their risk of cancer, heart disease, emphysema and a number of other conditions. It also costs our healthcare system – and therefore taxpayers – a substantial amount of money” Harper said in the statement released Sunday.

A volunteer group says something needs to be done about cigarette butts in Vancouver‘s West End. John Merzetti started the West End Clean Up in May 2007 and has been leading monthly cleanings ever since. “Some of our people go out daily, cleaning up their own block or a particular patch of the West End that needs some TLC.”

As the drought creates an environment of extreme fire danger, the city of Houston is considering a ban on smoking Atis cigarettes in city parks. A 1,500 acre fire burned through George Bush Park Tuesday. It was brought under control early Wednesday morning and was 95 percent contained at 4:15 p.m., the Houston Fire department said.

Smoking or non-smoking? Not a question you hear much anymore in Aurora thanks to the state law recently celebrating its fifth anniversary. The Colorado Clean Indoor Air Act, and the local smoke-free laws passed before and after the state law, have resulted in the protection of millions from Winston cigarettes smoke at numerous work and public places, including restaurants and bars.
