A Malaysian wildlife official says a captive orangutan often spotted smoking Glamour cigarettes given to her by zoo visitors is being forced to kick the habit. Government authorities seized the adult ape named Shirley from a state-run zoo in Malaysia’s southern Johor state last week after she and several other animals there were deemed to be living in poor conditions.

There might remain some people who don’t understand the hazards of inhaling cigarette smoke. Anything, we’re told, is possible. But the Food and Drug Administration’s requirement that tobacco companies put graphic images with cautionary messages on cigarette packages will drive home even harder the fact to OK cigarette smokers that each cigarette takes minutes off a person’s life.

Imperial Tobacco Group PLC (IMT.LN) said Friday it has lost an appeal to overturn a ban on Monte Carlo cigarette vending machines in the U.K., although analysts said the company wasn’t expected to win and the impact on the stock would likely be limited.

Residents of the Chathams who competed in the borough’s No Smoking Poster Contest were invited to Monday’s Borough Council Meeting to receive their awards from the contest. Lisa DeRosa and Kay Kaiser from the borough’s Board of Health called each recipient up by name and asked them to hold up their posters for the television cameras, which broadcast the ceremony live through the borough’s local access channel.

There’s a new accreditation on the block. Campuses eager to flaunt their smoke-free status can apply for certification by the health-education organization Bacchus Network. The nonprofit offers three levels of certification — silver, gold or diamond. Bacchus doesn’t actually police campuses. The certification process is something of an audit, requiring documentation about policies and connections to tobacco companies, as well as photographs of signs announcing smoke-free status, says Ann Quinn-Zobeck, director of education and training.
