Liverpool Cigarette and Alcohol Crime
Funding of £400,000 will enable the fight against illegal alcohol and tobacco trading in Liverpool to continue. A special unit was set up by the city council’s Trading Standards department to deal with the problem of counterfeit cigarettes and alcohol sales to underage drinkers.
Its funding was due to run out but the Primary Care Trust has now provided the funding which will keep it open until 2013.
The unit has had numerous successes since it was set up in 2008, working with customs officers to take more than £1.4m of illegal tobacco off the streets.
It has also carried out undercover operations to test whether cigarettes and alcohol are being sold to youngsters, with more than 1,000 shops targeted.
It has the power to close premises temporarily if they are found to be breaking the law.
