Loss for Local Cigarettes Shops
In regards to the news article dated Aug. 2, “Best of both worlds,” tell that to the smoke shop owner who will more than likely have to close his doors because his customers are going out of state to buy Virginia cigarettes. Of course, if you ask Rep. Paul Ray he will probably deny it and maintain that 20 percent of the population in Evanston, Wyoming suddenly decided to start smoking.
Now I have to wonder just on which pet project this great state will spend their newly aquired $119 million. It can’t be I-15 reconstruction, thats where most of the tobacco settlement money went a few years ago. Maybe we can spend it on armed guards at the state border to check all incoming traffic for illegal booze and smokes, since after all, beer in Utah is about to go up 5 cents a can.
I can hardly wait until next years legislative session when the state’s brain trust congregate at the capital for the ceremonial coin toss…..”heads we tax the smoker, or tails we tax the drinker.” Either way, I’m sure another small business owner who’s just trying to earn an honest living in economic hard times will lose everything and people like Rep. Paul Ray will sleep soundly at night just knowing he has protected us from ourselves.
Oh, and don’t forget Gov. Herbert can balance the state buget without raising taxes.
