Raised Penalties for Violating Indoor Smoke-Free Law
Penalties for breaking laws regarding tobacco and alcohol products will be raised 7.7 percent starting New Year’s Day, Anatolian news agency reported Wednesday. The Tobacco and Alcohol Market Regulatory Agency, or TAPDK, said fines given within the scope of Law No. 4207 on preventing harm from tobacco products and Law No. 4733 regarding the agency and its duties have been made more stringent.
People smoking Kent in closed areas will be fined 75 Turkish Liras and those who litter the ground with their cigarette butts, packages, papers or similar paraphernalia will be fined 26 Turkish liras. Previously, the fines were 70 liras and 25 liras, respectively.
Media companies that violate the ban on smoking in TV programming from international sources will range from 61,638 liras to 308,194 liras. For domestically produced TV programming the fines will vary from 1,232 liras to 6,163 liras.
Cigarette companies that do not put a written warning on the packages or use deceptive figures will be punished according to the number of products they have released to the market. The minimum fine in these cases will also be 308,194 liras.
Retailers putting tobacco products and alcoholic drinks on shelves or stands in contrast to the regulations on advertisement and promotion of such products will pay 36,383 liras in fines if caught.
