In 2011, the rate of sales of tobacco to minors in Fond du Lac County was 10 percent, in compliance with the Federal Synar regulation which requires states to maintain a youth access rate of less than 20 percent. This is part of a comprehensive approach to preventing youth access to tobacco, said Sandy Bernier, Fond du Lac County Tobacco Control program coordinator, in a press release. The rate for 2011 is half of the rate from 2010.

A group of about 10 students paid a visit to the basement of the University bookstore in Ferren Mall early yesterday morning. But unlike most students, they were not there to buy books. Instead the students, part of United Students Against Sweatshops, found success in their campaign to stop the sale of R.J. Reynolds cigarettes on campus.

Having endured a drought-plagued season last fall, burley tobacco farmers in Kentucky hope to be rewarded for their resilience in sticking with the embattled crop — a lynchpin of the region’s farm economy until smoking bans, health concerns and social stigma took a toll. Tobacco experts are upbeat about prospects for a spike in burley prices in the marketing season getting under way, thanks in part to favorable curing conditions that should make the leaf more appealing to cigarette producers.

The Directorate of Post Clearance Audit (PCA) Karachi has detected short payment of federal excise duty, sales tax and withholding tax to the tune of millions on the import of cigarettes by a leading best quality Marlboro cigarette manufacturer. A customs official told Business Recorder here on Wednesday that the PCA had detected the case during scrutiny of the data after clearance of the imported consignments. During the post clearance audit exercise, it has been found that the company has imported consignments of the imported cigarettes from three different collectorates.

While Marlboro cigarette sales continue to drag in the U.S. and parts of Europe, tobacco volumes in many other corners of the world remain robust. Philip Morris International Inc.’s (PM) first-quarter profit rose 13% on growth in Asian markets that offset trouble in Ukraine, which recently raised taxes, and cash-strapped Spain.
