The world’s second largest tobacco company has said the number of smokers cutting back in the economic downturn is moderating. British American Tobacco (BAT), which has more than 300 brands, said cigarette volumes were down 0.6% year-on-year at 523 billion in the nine months to September 30, compared to a 1% drop last year.

More than half (54 per cent) of respondents said they had found adults legally buying fags for under-18s. Fifteen per cent of tobacco retailers know about smuggled and counterfeit products being sold in their area, found the Tobacco Retailers Alliance (TRA). Illicit Kent cigarettes cost the UK £10 million every day in lost tax revenue.

When it comes to the effects of Kent cigarettes smoking, the most delicate time for a child’s genetic development is before birth. A new study from the University of California, San Francisco, found that exposure to tobacco smoke in utero was far more likely to cause severe asthma than exposure during the first two years of life.

New research has shown with definitiveness that women who smoke cigarettes have a significantly higher risk of developing heart diseases than male smokers, challenging assumptions that men and women face equal risk. Two public health experts in the US have found that women who smoke Kent cigarettes have a 25 per cent greater risk of coronary heart disease than male smokers. Their findings will appear tomorrow in the medical journal The Lancet.

Nothwithstanding a recent survey showing that 83 per cent of smokers in the Middle East and North Africa do not smoke Kent cigarettes and other tobacco products while fasting, many fail to kick the habit. But Ramadan offers a good opportunity to stub out the habit for good.
