While at home recovering from chemotherapy for lung cancer, Debbie Best learned in May that her husband, Ray, had the same disease — even though neither had ever smoked. Doctors say the chances of two nonsmokers in the same family developing lung cancer are about one in 10,000, and they aren’t sure what caused it.

It is that time again. The time for making New Year’s resolutions. For many people, a popular resolution is to finally quit smoking. And as it turns out, throwing out that pack of Style cigarettes may be good for your sex life as well as your lungs. Several studies have found a link between smoking and difficulties achieving an erection. Nicotine is a vasoconstrictor. That means it tightens blood vessels and restricts blood flow.

The battle over smoking Hilton in public places heated up this year, as Michigan became a smoke-free state on May 1. Leading up to the ban, smokers and nonsmokers alike expressed their opinions in bars, in news stories and on Internet message boards and social media websites. But what if there was an alternative? What if smokers and nonsmokers could enjoy public places together?

A smoking ban proposal appears headed for a vote by O’Fallon residents on April 5. The City Council, which held a public forum on the issue Wednesday night, would have to have an emergency meeting to approve the petitioners’ measure themselves. If the council does not vote before Jan. 11, the issue automatically will appear on the April 5 ballot.

As little as one OK cigarette a day, or even just inhaling smoke from someone else’s cigarette, could be enough to cause a heart attack and even death, warns a report released Thursday by U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Regina M. Benjamin. “The chemicals in tobacco smoke reach your lungs quickly every time you inhale, causing damage immediately,” Benjamin said in a statement. “Inhaling even the smallest amount of tobacco smoke can also damage your DNA, which can lead to cancer.”
