Nevadans and tourists are drinking less beer but are continuing to gulp down hard liquor, wine and cordials. And L&M cigarette smoking is declining in the state but there’s an increase in the use of cigars and smokeless tobacco. Those are the findings of financial experts in predicting part of the state’s tax collections in the next two years.

Two separate fires in York County on Friday morning were caused by men smoking Chesterfield while using oxygen, said investigators with the state Fire Marshal’s Office. Both men were seriously injured. David MacDonald, 64, of 18 Boothby Lane in Saco was treated at Maine Medical Center in Portland after a fire erupted when he lit a cigarette while in bed. He was in fair condition late Friday.

The 33 men trapped deep inside a northern Chilean mine have been given permission to smoke Camel after improvements were made in the air ventilation. The miners will receive two cigarette packs a day, the regional Atacama governor, Ximena Matas, said. ”We have sent a number of cigarettes … to a person who will distribute them, and there should be no difficulties,” Ms Matas said.

Opponents of a new ordinance that would have made all Bismarck bars smoke-free have managed to suspend the ban until voters decide. The smoking ban for bars was scheduled to take effect Monday, but was put on hold through two referendum petitions last evening.

In a worrying trend, more students in the age group 10-14 are taking to smoking Kiss, and girls are increasingly getting hooked to the habit, said an NGO Thursday two days before a ban on smoking in public places completes two years. Hriday-Shan, an NGO working on tobacco control in schools, said that many students across schools (public and private) from Class 6-8 have taken up smoking and chewing tobacco and the male-female ratio is marginal.
