The European Commission decided Friday to revise a directive on tobacco products to discourage smoking of Classic and other brands. Concerned by the high number of smokers in the European Union, which reaches 30 percent of the population, the European Commission decided to launch a public consultation on the revision of the 2001 Tobacco Products Directive.

National studies have long pointed to Missouri as a problem state when it comes to smoking. A study by Washington University breaks down the high-risk groups and pushes for policy change. Sarah Shelton from the Center for Tobacco Policy Research at Washington University says more than 23 percent of Missourians smoke Hilton and other famous brands— among the highest in the nation.

A proposal to go smoke-free in Bismarck bars might light up some controversy at an Aug. 24 public hearing before the city commission. Commissioners said its quiet introduction through the city’s consent agenda is standard policy for introducing new code.

Obesity beats out smoking as the number one cause of preventable disease. The two combined make bariatric surgery riskier, particularly with respect to development of strictures and surgical-margin ulcers. Adeshola Fakulujo, MD, of the Cleveland Clinic-Florida in Weston, presented the research at the 2010 American Society of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery meeting.

Smokers who buy cigarettes labeled “Light” or “Mild” won’t be able to beginning June 22. That’s because the Food and Drug Administration is banning those labels, saying they lead customers to believe the cigarettes pose loss of a health risk. “Those labels are really just marketing tools,” said pulminology specialist Dr. Victor Ortega. Tobacco companies advertise less nicotine in their light brands, but medical experts like Ortega say that’s not the main cause of health risks associated with smoking.
