Malaysian Government is considering requiring tobacco companies to print cigarette sticks with the words “Smoking is dangerous to your health.” In another tough action to discourage people from smoking mostly teenagers, cigarette producers may also be prohibited from making claims concerning tobacco grade, quality and flavor of their smokes. These and many other conditions are most likely to be included in the Control of Tobacco Product Regulations 2004 when the Government strengthens its enforcement in order to make all public places in the country fully smoke-free. According to a reliable source, the Health Ministry would be looking for public feedback in the coming week on its plan to discourage Malaysians from this hazardous habit.

Today, even though there’s a lot of of smoke-free warnings, 18.7 per cent of teenagers in the 12th grade smoke cigs 11.8 per cent of 10th graders smoke and 6.1 per cent of 8th graders smoke also. According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse’s Monitoring the Future research these numbers are historically low but getting hooked on nicotine is never a good idea. Teenagers smoke tobacco products because of the “cool factor” and their peers probably smoke too. Some might argue that it relaxes them but that’s not what study shows. The reality is cigarette is a drug.

A recent study by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration suggests that youngsters between the ages of 12 and 17 are more probable to start using drugs, alcohol and cigs especially during the summer period than other seasons of the year. Rod Pruitt, Safe and Effective Schools Special Services specialist for the Region 14 Education Service Center, declared that June is “signified to be the month that marijuana is used more than any other month in the year.”

State economic losses from cigarettes smoking amount 3.5 billion dollar, the head of the national project “Ukraine without tobacco smoke” Andriy Skypalsky declared at a press meeting on the topic: “A prohibition on tobacco ads: the public and the State Inspectorate for Consumer Protection join their forces to run anti-smoking law.” According to him, the cigarettes advertising promotes a rapid growth of smoking rate among youngsters. “Ten years ago Ukraine moved to the fourth place in the world for the spread of smoking tobacco due to the massive promotion of smoking products. When the advertising of smoking was prohibited in the traditional mass media, Ukraine moved to the 29th place,” he explained.
