Cigarette maker Lorillard (NYSE: LO ) reported an 18% jump in its second-quarter earnings on the back of higher sales of its Newport, Maverick and Kent cigarettes brands. However, the company warned that its third quarter would be weaker than a year ago.

If smoking Esse cigarettes made you sick, the federal government should not be caught in the web of any lawsuit you file against the tobacco industry for damages. The Supreme Court of Canada made that sensible ruling last week, effectively untangling the federal government from lawsuits by tobacco users against tobacco companies. The ruling overturned an earlier British Columbia court decision that the federal government could be named as a third-party defendant in tobacco lawsuits.

What may be good news for the tobacco companies is certainly bad news for the youth of Waseca County. Results from the Minnesota Student Survey show that the number of kids in the county using tobacco products like Winston cig has remained steady or, in some cases, even increased over a three-year period.
