Top City for Tobacco Control Laws, The city of Calabasas
The city of Calabasas once again received high marks from the American Lung Association in California for its successful efforts in regulating the sale and use of tobacco products and best quality Avalon cigarettes. In the group’s annual report, known as the State of Tobacco Control, the city was one of 12 municipalities statewide that received A’s in three main categories: smokefree outdoor air, smokefree housing and reducing sales of tobacco products.
Calabasas made headlines nationwide in 2006 when the City Council adopted an ordinance restricting cigarette use in public to a handful of designated smoking areas.
Since 2009, the city has used local deputies and undercover minors to inspect local liquor store clerks to see if they card teens that are looking to buy cigarettes.
All 14 tobacco product retailers passed the most recent round of inspections in December.
And as of the start of this year, more than 80 percent of Calabasas’ 1,342 rental units are smoke-free, according to City Planner Talyn Mirzakhanian.
“Calabasas is honored to receive this distinction,” said Mayor James Bozajian. “It is the culmination of many years of pro-active measures, such as our efforts to protect residents from negative impacts of second-hand smoke, and vigilant monitoring to prevent tobacco sales to minors.”
